The stay

The road stops. Then the trail starts.

Rocha da Relva is a village cut into the southern cliffs of São Miguel, settled since the 15th century. Farmers and fishermen worked this land long before it had a name on a map. It still doesn't have a road. What it has is a handful of houses, no shops, and a stretch of coastline that almost nobody else gets to see.

You get here on a trail. Thirty minutes down, forty-five back up, cliffs and ocean the whole way. The house looks straight out over that water. Coffee happens on the terrace in the morning. The swell does the talking in the evening, and if the sea's kind, so do the dolphins.

It's a real hike, not a stroll, but honestly, just about anyone can do it. Little kids have. So have grandparents. Take your time, wear real shoes, and the quiet on the other side is worth every step.

Read this before you book

Know what you're walking into.

On foot only. Thirty minutes down, closer to forty-five coming back up. It's a real hike, not a stroll, but manageable for most ages and fitness levels if you take it slow.

Leave the car behind. The village is car-free. The trailhead lot isn't watched, and it's been broken into before. Leave anything valuable at the house, not in the car.

Bring food. No shops down here. Pack what you'll need for a few days. There's a fridge and a freezer waiting for it.

No streetlights. The nights are properly dark. Good for stars, bad for finding your footing. Come down before sunset and bring a flashlight.

Porters exist. Locals will carry your bags up or down for a fee.

Staying a month or more? A washer and dryer, plus a few extra comforts worth settling into.

Check-in after 2pm, checkout by 11am. Three-night minimum, and please book at least two days ahead.

This has been my home for five years.

I'm Assyrian by background, Canadian by passport, and I spend the rest of my time running a seafood truck back in Hamilton, Ontario. But Rocha da Relva is where I actually live. I don't think of it as a rental so much as a heritage project: an old piece of the island that would keep fading if nobody looked after it. Hosting here is part of keeping that alive, the land, the trail, the village itself.

Getting here

South coast of São Miguel.

About 15 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada and its airport. Then the road runs out, and you're on foot for the last thirty minutes, because the village itself doesn't allow cars. The pin below is the trailhead where you park.
